Many people in the US may not be aware that any entire area of Spain has been taken over, from the ground up, by co-op businesses since the 1950s. They have their own bank, and their own university, and it all started from a single factory making ovens. They compete in a global capitalist economy, but are run more-or-less democratically. I was wondering how this region has been doing with the recession, and this article tells the story.
Converting our economy from corporate to co-op basis is one of the most important things we could do to regain control of our lives, governance, and sustainability. It doesn’t require revolution, it can happen one little organic piece at a time.
